On 19 February, upon the completion of a major European concert tour with the Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev will conduct the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. The legendary theatre in Milan will see the performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) and Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. The soloist for the performance is the renowned Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire, for whom this will mark the first performance with the Italian orchestra. Valery Gergiev has collaborated with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala for a long time. Since 1990 the maestro has been an honorary member and guest conductor of the orchestra. During his last visit in February 2017, Valery Gergiev presented a Russian composers programme, featuring Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (arranged by Maurice Ravel) and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with a solo by the young pianist Alexander Malofeev, who has won several international competitions. |
